Creek Rat is a vintage-inspired exclusive brand rooted in classic American hot rod, surf, and counterculture art. Influenced by 1950s - 1960s custom car magazines, waterslide decals, and psychedelic posters, the work blends bold linework, smoke, flames, and humor into timeless, high-energy designs. At its core is the Creek Rat character - a mischievous symbol of freedom, speed, and life lived off the beaten path. Built for rodders, surfers, artists, and outsiders, Creek Rat Cartoons celebrates the raw creativity and rebellious spirit of a bygone era.
What is Creek Rat? The Creek Rat Brand was started by Denn Tezzier in the 1960's. Historically, a Creek Rat is what the Locals endearingly called us Kids who grew up and hung out at the Creek in Topanga Canyon California. Topanga Creek originates in the Santa Monica Mountains in Los Angeles County California and drains directly down to the beach on the Pacific Ocean south of Malibu. Topanga Creek is one of the few remaining waterways in the area without dams and is a spawning ground for Southern California Steelhead Trout. Denn Tezzier, being a Creek Rat Kid in Topanga, was also known as a local artist doing art in different expressions. The Canyon newspaper of the day, The Topanga Messenger, approached Denn to create a comic strip for publication in the newspaper, and Denn came up with the idea for the Creek Rat Brand. The Creek Rat Cartoons Comic Strip is still published to this day.
Over the years, the Creek Rat Brand has advanced into many different artistic styles, contemporary mediums, modern technologies as well as product manufacturing, merchandising, marketing, marine, automotive, spirits, clothing brands and multimedia platforms, and all still remaining and continuing in the Original Classic Vibe of Topanga Canyon and Malibu Beach.
